Why is everyone talking about the Census? Is it a big deal?
This is why…
Some people know that the Census is a count of the entire population in the USA; however many people do not know that it is actually established in our Constitution and has occurred every 10 years since 1790.
What does that mean for us in NYC?
Approximately $70 billion dollars goes to EACH state annually, over the next decade. It is estimated that each person who is not counted could reduce our funding by $20,000. New Yorkers– we NEED this funding, it’s used for many important social benefit programs like healthcare, education grants for students, school lunch programs, infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc.), public transportation and much more.
It also determines how many of the 435 seats in the US House of Representatives are apportioned to each state (Currently NY has 27, but get this– in 1952 it had 45, but we have been steadily losing them due to population changes and census under-counting. Let’s not be undercounted, or underestimated. Here is a link to fill out the 2020 Census.
