2020 has been a year of progressive changes for New York voters. Here’s a few of the updates you should know.
New Yorkers now have 9 days of early voting before every election (including the 2 weekends prior to the election). This is so important for allowing access to community members who can’t make it to a polling place. (Why Tuesday?)
Polling hours have been changed from 12-9pm to 6am to 9pm across the state. Learn More
The Voter Friendly Ballot Act will go into effect this year, and will work with specialists in design, user experience, and disability accommodation, to make significant improvements to the readability and layout of the ballot making sure it’s clear, legible and easy to understand for everyone. Starting in 2021, New Yorkers will be able to register to vote online.
16 and 17 year-olds can now pre-register to vote, and the Board of Elections will automatically register them once they turn 18.
These updated voting practices were the FIRST changes for state voters in over a century. There are still so many practices myself and my friends at The Brennan Center For Justice would like to see progress on to update our democratic voting process.
